Sensitive Teeth

What Are Sensitive Teeth?
For millions of people, sensitive teeth can make life miserable. The pain and discomfort make even favorite hot or cold foods impossible to enjoy. In many cases, sensitive teeth can be successfully treated bringing much sought after relief.
What Causes Sensitive Teeth?
Cavities, fractures, worn enamel, grinding teeth, or an exposed root can cause teeth to be sensitive. Enamel, the strongest substance in the body, covers and protects the crown or exposed portion of the tooth.

The enamel covering stops at the gum line where there is only a thin layer of cementum to cover the tooth dentin, which can allow more sensations through the tooth. If the protective blanket of the gums recedes, the underlying dentin can easily become exposed and cause sensitivity.

The doctors at Desert Dentistry will conduct a full examination of the underlying condition causing tooth
sensitivity and plan a treatment. If your tooth is sensitive due to areas of recession or exposed dentin we can apply a desensitizing solution, such as Gluma, to the affected areas at your dental appointment. This desensitizer helps to block the tubules (pores) in the tooth that carry sensations to the nerve, which will decrease the amount of sensitivity you experience.

Your doctor may also recommend a sensitivity toothpaste, such as Sensodyne, for use on a regular basis.

On Friday morning, my crown came off. I was able to get an appointment for 12:30 that day to have the crown place back on the tooth. The people at Desert Dentistry were very friendly and by 1:15 I was on my way to lunch.
