Porcelain Crowns

What Are Porcelain Crowns?
Porcelain crowns, also called caps, are restorations that cover and protect the tooth structure while improving the appearance of the tooth by restoring it to its normal shape and size. Dental crowns can whiten, reshape, and realign existing teeth, adding to a healthy and vibrant smile.

There are many options for the materials that make crowns today. We use exceptional laboratories that can make all-porcelain, porcelain-over-metal, or gold crowns.

Why would I need a crown?
When a tooth is cracked, decayed, or damaged, a dental crown may need to be fitted onto the tooth. A dental crown is a full-coverage restoration that fits over a portion of the original tooth. Crowns are also used to attach a bridge or cover a dental implant.
How long does it take to get a crown?
The crown procedure usually takes two visits. On the first visit, the tooth will be shaped, and a temporary crown will be placed while the lab makes the final crown. While you are wearing the temporary crown, you will need to take extra special care so it does not come off. Be careful flossing around the temporary crown and don’t eat anything sticky with it (like caramel). If the temporary should come off, please call us as soon as possible to have it temporarily cemented back on.

On the second visit, the dentist will verify the fit, shape, and shade of the precision lab-made crown. If everything is perfect, the crown will be permanently cemented. You will be able to maintain good oral hygiene around the crown through regular flossing and brushing.

Before & after
Review

On Friday morning, my crown came off. I was able to get an appointment for 12:30 that day to have the crown place back on the tooth. The people at Desert Dentistry were very friendly and by 1:15 I was on my way to lunch.
